One of the most frequent questions we got asked by our followers is related to the issue of prosthesis availability for patients with diabetes. In this Article, we try to provide general information on the issue.
As is the case in every other medical condition, the condition of each patient visiting for physical examination should be examined in a way that is unique to the patient. Because the underlying factors of the pain occurring in the knee, hip or shoulder may be caused by various elements. While in some cases these types of pain are rooted in psychological factors, in others the causes of the pain may indeed be serious.
The elements constituting the pain should be defined during the examination. If such elements are supported by the MRI scans and the case has shown reduced cartilage, arthritis and/or various deformations, then, the surgery is unavoidable.
Still, every patient has different medical background. The factors such as the patient’s age or whether they have other conditions should be carefully reviewed prior to the surgery. Whether the patient has any heart condition, or suffers from diabetes, rheumatic diseases, or has problems such as systemic lupus will have a direct impact on the scenario of the surgery.
The vein structure is very important in deciding on operation in patients with diabetes. The vein structure differs from a patient who has had a long-time diabetes condition to a patient who has recently got diagnosed. This is an issue that has to be examined by the physician and shared with the patient with due diligence before proceeding with the surgery. Another important issue that requires attention is the risk of infection. Since tissues and veins are deformed in patients with diabetes, the risk of infection is 2 or 3 times higher than non-diabetes patients. The patients with diabetes contemplating on whether to have this surgery should be informed of all potential risks by their physicians. The patient has to acknowledge what kind of complications may be associated with the procedure in advance.
