CAUSES OF HIP DISLOCATION

In this article, we are going to focus on the causes of the hip location in accordance with the information provided by Prof Dr. Ömer Faruk Bilgen, M.D., Specialist of Orthopedics and Traumatology.

In our previous articles about the hip dislocations we have addresses several different cases and treatment methods. Before diving into the treatment methods of hip dislocations in depth, we are going to share the takeaways of Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Bilgen, M.D., Orthopedist as an attempt to answer question such as “Is there any cause of hip dislocations?”, “Why does it emerges in adults?”, “Is there a genetical passage?”

The case of hip dislocation starts in the intrauterine environment – i.e. mother’s womb. In addition to the lack of development in the mother’s womb, the lack of proper controls and genetic factors play a role in the emergence of hip dislocation. Therefore, supervision during and after the labor, as well as examination during the first six months is significant in terms of early diagnosis. Because the treatment of hip dislocation is quite easy, as long as the condition has been diagnosed early. Even if the patient is aged between 15 and 20, it would be the wrong approach to wait until full development of the bone structure. The corrective operations to be performed until the full development of the hip will enable the patient to use their hip for a long time.

Emphasizing the parents’ lack of awareness on cases of hip dislocation among the infants in the past, Prof. Dr. Bilgen, M.D. points out the current rareness of swaddle or similar applications and conscious efforts shown by the parents of today. However, we can argue that the cases of Type 1 hip dislocation, called “displacement” have increased in the recent times. Displacement is associated with the lack or delay of treatment during childhood. Generally, the development of the socket of the hip bone, called “acetabulum”, has mostly been completed by the time of reaching age one. After one and a half year of age the socket is almost fully developed. Thus, it would be an improper approach to wait an increase of depth in the socket. Therefore, this surgery must be performed until an infant reaches age one and a half. The earlier the hip dislocation gets diagnosed, the better.

Let’s assume that a patient is diagnosed with the case of hip displacement by reviewing the MRI scan. When the measurements are controlled, we may not immediately suggest an operation, unless the patient shows an incapability or experiences discomfort, pain, trouble in walking in distance. However, it should be noted that this condition may cause further problems in the future. The most important aspect for the patient and the doctor in such cases is being fully aware of this condition. NOTE: The contents of this page are exclusively provided for informative purposes.
