HIP DISLOCATION DURING CHILDHOOD

Çocukluk Döneminde Kalça Çıkığı

In our previous article, we focused on the subject of “hip dislocation in infants, diagnosis and symptoms.” In this article, we are going to focus on the subject of “hip dislocation in children.”

According to Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Bilgen, M.D., Specialist of Orthopedics and Traumatology, since the hip joint completely changes it position in these cases, limping and shortness of legs become apparent as soon as the child starts walking. But, pain is typically not observed during the childhood phase. Because the defect is not severe enough to cause any pain.

Children with Hip Dislocation Start Walking Late

Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Bilgen states that the parents may check whether their children have hip dislocation by paying attention to the following points:

Children with hip dislocation may have shorter legs.

As the child starts walking, the limping becomes apparent; also, children with this condition starts waking later.

While in the normal cases children start walking around the age of one, children with hip dislocation may not walk until the age of 1.5-2. Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Bilgen, M.D., Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Private Medicabil Hospital reiterates the most important point as follows, “The cases of hip dislocation are usually diagnosed as a result of the examinations conducted by pediatricians and specialists of orthopedics and traumatology during the infancy period. However, this condition may cause major issues if go unnoticed, delayed or not taken serious despite being a condition that can be diagnosed and treated in the early years of a patient’s life. Consequently, it causes series of disorders that may have serious impacts throughout one’s lifetime. Therefore, I would like to emphasize the fact that the preventive medicine and practices are the foundation of this case. Typically, the infant’s hip is viewed via ultrasound whereby it is measured and evaluated according to certain specific angles and scales. During the following period, the development disorders are closely monitored to decide on the necessity of an operation. Therefore, with the examinations conducted by the specialists of orthopedics these scans and angles are cautiously reviewed to determine whether an operation is necessary.
