We continue our series of articles on the informative episode of Olay Health Show (Olay Sağlık Programı) featuring Specialist of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Bilgen, M.D., broadcasted under moderation of Yeliz Cengiz. In this article, we share the information provided by the Chair of Board of Directors of Private Bursa Medicabil Hospital, Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Bilgen, M.D. on “Prosthesis Surgery Due to Osteoarthritis.”
Patients with Osteoarthritis Should Be Well-Prepared for their Prosthesis Surgery
Orthopedist Prof. Dr. Bilgen, M.D. emphasizes that the patients with osteoarthritis should be well-prepared before the operation, which is associated with the risk of infection and vascular occlusion (embolism). Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Bilgen, M.D. classifies the risk of infection in two categories. First group is the risks originating from the patient; second group is the risks associated with the environment surrounding them. The risks originating from the patient may be listed as the focal points of infection such as the infections in their teeth, urinary tract, or toes due to ingrown toenails. These focal points should be examined, determined and treated prior to the operation. The second group of infection risks is related with the environment surrounding the patient. The environmental factors may include the eligibility of the conditions of the operating room to the prosthesis surgery, and the accomplishment of a full-scale sterilization. Stating that the number of particles and micro-organisms contained in the operating room where the prosthesis surgery would take place, as well as the temperature, humidity levels, amount of fresh air, the air pressure, air flow and similar parameters should be kept under control with a system called “Laminar Air Flow”, Bilgen says “When we look at the global literature, the limit of acceptable infection is defined between 0 or 2 percent. Although it may be defined a little higher in certain resources. In other words, this means that there is a problem if more than 1 or 2 out of 100 operations result in infection.” On the other
hand, he continues to explain, “some patients say “apparently, my body rejects prosthesis”. However, the chances of encountering with a case involving prosthesis rejection i.e. allergic reaction to metals are in fact very slim. Prof. Dr. Bilgen, M.D. declares “our rate of infection in primary cases is %0.” With this assertion, we conclude our article on prosthesis surgery due to osteoarthritis. What kind of risks is associated with the prosthesis surgeries?
1- The risks originating from the patient. 2- The risks associated with the patient’s environment.
What are the risks originating from the patient in the prosthesis surgeries? The risks originating from the patient may be listed as the focal points of infection such as the infections in their teeth, urinary tract, or toes due to ingrown toenails.
What are the associated with the patient’s environment in the prosthesis surgeries? The environmental factors may include the eligibility of the conditions of the operating room to the prosthesis surgery, and the accomplishment of a full-scale sterilization.
