In our last article we defined the prosthesis surgery in light of the information provided by the Chair of Board of Directors of Private Medicabil Hospital, Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Bilgen, M.D., Specialist of Orthopedics and Traumatology during his appearance in the Olay Health Show (Olay Sağlık Programı) broadcasted on Bursa Olay TV (Click here to watch). In this article, we will answer the question of “who are eligible for prosthesis surgery?”
There Are No Minimum Age Requirements in Prosthesis Surgery
Seeing patients in the Private Bursa Medicabil Hospital’s Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Bilgen, M.D., states that the prosthetics surgeries are typically available for patients with joint disorders. Stating that there are no minimum age requirements for conducting prosthesis surgeries, Prof. Dr. Bilgen, M.D. underlines that there are prosthesis available for operating the patients in childhood. While promising that we will dive into this issue in another topic, we will talk about the prosthesis applications available for young, middle-aged and elderly patients and the process through which a joint transforms itself. Orthopedist Prof Dr. Ömer Faruk Bilgen, M.D. states that the patients who experience pain, struggle to walk, are unable to complete daily tasks and are in their convenient ages are the suitable candidates to proceed with this surgery. It is unnecessary for the patients to tolerate and endure pain before reaching a specific age to have this surgery. However, this statement by no means suggests that anybody experiencing pain should get prosthesis surgery. It is required that the patient’s clinical findings and radiological tests be found within the defined viable limitations prior to the surgery. Moreover, a physician should evaluate the patient’s capability to carry out daily activities. According to Orthopedist Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Bilgen, a patient may experience pain in their joints, hips or knees; however, he asserts that the prosthesis surgery (arthroplasty) is the last choice of treatment, in other words, it should be viewed as the final resort. Because the prosthesis application is
an irreversible procedure that will impact the patient for the remainder of their life. The timing of the surgery should be appropriate. Surgery should not be advised unless it is absolutely necessary. By applying the best surgical technique it is possible to get a successful result. Following our previous articles on the prosthesis surgery, respectively titled “What is Prosthesis Surgery” and “Who Are Eligible for Prosthesis Surgery” we will deal with the question of “How to Operate a Prosthesis Surgery” in the third article on the subject matter.
